Graduation

When students reach a set point in the repertoire, they have an opportunity to prepare a graduation recording. (Audio or video)

Here are the requirements for which pieces need to be on the recording for which level.

Grade 12 students may also submit a special Graduation recording of a selection from the SAA Teacher Training audition list, available at this link:

All selections on the recording need to be performed with accompaniment.

  1. Accompaniment parts may be played on Piano, Harpsichord, Guitar, Cello, or Bass Recorder,  as a duet with your teacher, with a prerecorded accompaniment recording, using SmartMusic, etc.  The most important part about having the accompaniment on the recording is that is shows your understanding of how the two parts fit together.

The recording is supervised by the private teacher. It may be made during a lesson, or your teacher may make a special appointment just for recording.

  1. 1.Record each piece

  2. 2.Listen to it

  3. 3.Decide what can be improved

  4. 4.Then record it again

It is the objective critical listening that is the most important part of this process. Student learn so much between take 1 and take 2 after they hear themselves!

The completed recording is submitted to the Music Program Director by the deadline (usually the Thursday before the Winter break).

The recording is then given to one of the other teachers in the ESFRS program. This teacher will listen to the recording and provide an adjudication which will be returned to the student.

The adjudication will be used to prepare a polished performance of selections from the graduation recording. The performance will take place as part of the “Groups and Grads”  concert in March.

The purpose of the ESFRS graduation program is:

  1. to provide a clear goal for repertoire review

  2. to celebrate student accomplishment

  3. to develop critical objective listening through the use of recordings
